I decided that Lura needs goggles to protect her eyes during her flights, so I'm commissioning Eileen at Silverbeam on Etsy to design a pair of 3-D printed, nylon plastic goggles to my specs. I gave her necessary measurements today, as well as pictures relating to my concept:

Anyway, I also got some plastic sculpting tools. I think I may also get a Volks Cera-Canna, primarily because I've heard nothing but amazing reports about it.

I don't understand why the Volks Dollfie Dreams of licensed anime and manga characters are so expensive. More precisely, why do their prices inflate so horribly on the secondary market?

For example, here's Rise Kujikawa, a limited edition from this year. As you can see if you scroll to the bottom of the page, she sold for $605.00 on Volks USA, excluding shipping. I just saw her on the DOA marketplace for $1690.00, excluding shipping.

Here's Lucy Maria Misora, an LE from this year as well. She originally sold for $605.00, but I see her on the marketplace for $1200.00.

Finally, here's an unofficial set of pictures of Kana Unchou, an LE from 2009. She originally sold for JPY 58000.00, which, let's say, is ~$740.00. She's currently on the marketplaces for $1950.00. But don't fret -- shipping is included!

I suppose their secondary market value increases so disgustingly because of a) scalpers and b) people willing to pay scalpers' prices. I still don't fathom, though, why someone would drop $2K on a soft vinyl doll that stains if you sneeze in its general direction. The question remains -- who are these people willing to pay so much?

There are quite a few BJD companies out there that make beautiful, well-sculpted, appealing BJDs for between $200.00 and $300.00. There's Elfdoll with its line of 14cm tinies, Fairyland with its RealPukis and PukiPukis, 5StarDoll with its 60cm line, Planetdoll with its entire stock, Angell Studio with all dolls <40cm, Dragondoll with dolls <70cm, et hoc genus omne.

Knowing this, I have to wonder why other companies [coughVolkscough, coughSoomcough] charge up to 4 times that amount. Obviously, I have willingly paid for multiple Sooms and Volkses, so I'm not complaining, just wondering where the markup comes in. I think we're paying for the brand. >_>

I think Volks' old F-08 and current F-05 are really cute. I keep admiring Ashbet's and then forgetting what sculpt they are!

No word yet from the seller, which is surprising, because DOA members tend to be fanatically prompt in responding to PMs. Very frustrating!

I have inquired about the Volks Emma on the DOA Marketplace. That is all.
modernwizard: (Default)
Been eyeing a Volks Emma on the DOA Marketplace, but that's not the serious part. The serious part is that I gave her a name already: Nathaniel.

And you know what that means.

Craaaaaaaaaaap.

I have developed a crush on a 60cm BJD, Volks Emma. At the latest Chittenden County Doll club meetup, Lyrajean brought her Volks Masha, who I thought was an Emma, so I looked online for Emmas and decided I liked her better than Masha.

So cute, so cute, so cute! I'm sick of Soom's pillowy, liquid, androgynous sculpts [gasp!] because they can be really bland, but Emma has character. She reminds me of a real kid. And that little smirk... ^_^

Other people had some really striking dolls at doll club today, and Breck showed me how to improve the quality of my close-ups, so here are some detailed pics.

Thinking about the pretty Soom Breccia head that I sort of want, I ask myself what I would do with her. Of course she’d get a body. I’m sure she would dress up in the cheap, tacky remnants of my 1:3 wardrobe. It’s entirely possible that I would give her some sort of sloppy custom faceup that would further decrease her value, not to mention pink hair. And then…

Then what? Then she would go on the “big dollies” shelf along with Sardonix and Junebug, and she would sit there, making friends with them and quietly yellowing. She would come out for doll meets, where the audience would ooh and aah over her and take photos, and I’m sure she’d have televised chats with Sardonix and Junebug occasionally, but I don’t think I’d take lots of pictures of her or play with her a lot. Certainly not as frequently as I play with my 1:6ers.

I’d like a big doll with pink hair. None of my past BJDs had the appropriate type of pink hair. Zephque had a pale pink wig with double buns, but it wasn’t pink enough. My Soom Uyoo version of Jennifer had a wig of pink yarn for a while that looked good, but too much like Anneka’s hair. My Soom Sabik Will had a bright pink fur wig of the appropriate color, but it didn’t have double ponytails, and he was too big for me anyway…

I think I would get a Volks Dollfie Dream body for the putative Breccia head. It’s nice and light and sexy and relatively poseable. It’s also kinda cheap. The only problem is that Dollfie Dreams stain really easily. I’d have to make sure that all her clothes were lined, and nothing denim and/or black for her! That’s easy…I already have the an42 pink and orange paisley dress that I’d want her to wear…and the stripey black and white socks.

She would be such a pretty doll!

I think I need a camera with a really good zoom lens, or I need a good zoom lens to put on my current camera.

Just a few people [six] came to doll club today, so the meeting lasted shorter than usual. I brought Tamsin, a doll customized by Andrea and wearing a combo of dress, apron and stockings made by Andrea, sitting in a Vitra mini chair from a package from Andrea. Tamsin's multicolored hair and detailed paint job were much exclaimed over.Read more... )

Michaela started off in an earlier incarnation as a CG head on a CG 1.0 body, but, when I redid her, I put her CG head on an articulated Barbie body with Obitsu hands, then painted the arms and neck to match her head's color. [Linked entry shows her before skintone matching.]

Michaela's Barbie body, while being appropriately small and slight for a girl that was killed and vamped at 13, does not pose very well. But Michaela is a key player in the next few seasons [in the Anneka and Will vs. Thomas plotline], so she needs to pose well! That's why she's getting a Volks Dollfie Plus body. Though I have eschewed these bodies in the past because of their fragile floppiness, I choose one now because, unlike an Obitsu, the neck width of a Volks will make Michaela's head look in proportion. Hooray!

Round 1 was when she was an action fig head on a cut-down Toy Biz body. Round 2 was when she was an Elfdoll Kathlen head on an Obitsu 27cm torso with Obitsu 23cm legs. Since the large torso and the small legs didn't fit together very well, I got her a whole new Obitsu 27cm body with the intent to cut down the legs to an appropriate length. After all, I have experience doing so in the form of Geordie.

I'm currently stumped, though, since the Obitsu 27cm, despite its appropriate scrawniness elsewhere, possesses comparatively thunderous thighs. But Absinthe, being 13 when she died, is not supposed to have any curves. There's no way to get rid of the thunderous thighs unless I swap out her pelvis and legs for those from ANOTHER doll. Maybe a Volks EB Dollfie boy? Part of me just wants to get her a resin body, preferably Planetdoll Mini Riz'.

Right now she's in pieces as I try to construct a body for her. I am unhappy that one of my favorite characters is in pieces. After the many frustrations I am going through to make her, I am making her a primary character, just to get back as much blood, sweat and tears as I put into her.

Goal: Scrawny 1:6 male body to accommodate standard action fig heads.

Detailed discussion of body types, pros and cons. )

Basic options: Bulk up a slender body. Trim down a muscular body. Transgenderize a fem body.

Because I am much better at reducing than adding, trimming down a muscular body would be better than bulking up a slender one. Because I am much more familiar with STEAK KNIFE MASECTOMIES than with trimming down muscular bodies, transgenderizing a fem body appeals to me most.

When I ever get some free time, I should compare the size of Will's head to the neckpost of a PB.

Thanks, Volks. This chart explains everything: how dolls are born, how they grow, how they have lives, how they die?! ...But I wonder about hybrid dolls. Does Frank, a Volks Yukinojo head on a Dollmore Model Doll body with Twiglimbs arms, have only 1/3 of a soul or something? The chart is silent. Noooooo !  Just when I think this hobby is all about people having fun and playing with dolls, something reminds me that there are some big cultural differences between my perceptions of dolls and other BJD owners' perceptions.  Read more... )

I finally went to doll club today with Will and Sardonix. Will's clothes reached a new sartorial nadir of horrible fabulousness; I never knew I could create such staggering amounts of fashion-related weirdness with a limited number of items. He also got a new wig from Volks SD Kun, a brownish, ex-blond long straight cut. For once in her life, Sardonix kept quiet and didn't cause any trouble, probably because she was too busy stabbing things with her Vengeance Unicorn.

At the Burlington Doll Club meet today, I enjoyed seeing members that I hadn't greeted in a while. I showed off my new Sabik, and Rosa Palomino's YoSD Ann was interested in his hat.

Yesterday Boston-area doll dorks and I converged on a New England Winter Wonderland convention for a small meet-up. After hanging around in the dealer's room and droooooooooooooling for a few hours, we repaired to our own meeting area...  Before we did that, though, some of us ventured to Newbury Street in search of food. On the way back from Greek cuisine, Frank perpetrated lewd acts on the contents of a lawn ornament display. :p

With all the hoopla about the Volks SD16 boy at the end of last year, I expected the Volks SD16 to come with a similar fanfare. Nope. Olivia Morgan just snuck in quietly as an LE 100 available only at some party and then through Fashion Doll Quarterly.

Buzz over on DOA is lukewarm. People like the more mature body, but the jointless ankles really turn them off. People also seem to like her more mature face, but everyone pretty much agrees she looks like a female form of Yukinojo. Both DOA speculation and the FDQ behind-the-scenes article conclude that Volks is chasing the American fashion doll market and therefore introducing a BJD with some of the same qualities [curvaceousness, blond hair, pointy feets] as Barbie.

I really like her. She has the type of body that Frank should have: tall, thick, strong and curvy. She also has a very sweet face that begs to be glammed up. She's also much less expensive [as these things go] than Yukinojo. You can order her over at the FDQ site for $969 + $11 s/h in the USA. Not that I'm about to break my bank account for her. Frank could still kick her butt any day. :p Wanna see some pictures?

At yesterday's Burlington doll meet, Jareth proudly showed off his snazzy cape. Jamie [DrNero] saw how voluminous it was and wondered how many other dolls you could hide under here. This silly photo was the result. No dolls were corrupted in the shooting of this photo, although everyone seemed a bit traumatized afterward by the...wrongness of it. We've got two Dollmore 40cms under there ["His hand is bigger than my head" = Ujee, "I'm closing my eyes" = unknown], a Volks Toppi ["Mister..."] and a CP unknown ["I'm calling"]. :pRead more... )

I figured out how to pull pictures from completed YJ auctions, so I proudly present two photos of what should be coming in the mail to me. I never fathomed impulse BJD purchases, primarily because of the large sums involved. Now, after having successfully bid a disgusting amount for an eyeless SD 16 Yukinojo Sawaragi head on Yahoo Japan, I still don't fathom them. Nope, sorry...no pictures. I forgot to pull them before the auction ended. If anyone can help me there, I'd be grateful. Exultation and musing over BJD likenesses follows. Read more... )

SD16 Yukinojo has such a sweet face. He would make a perfect Frank. But he costs five billion dollars, and he's an LE, and all I want is his stupid head.
