Yeghisabet

I lackadaisically collect nicknames and foreign-language equivalents of my name, and I ran across a new one [to me] just now: the Armenian Yeghisabet. You can hear a woman pronouncing it here.

Anyway, I always had the amusing idea of writing a story or something where all characters were nicknames or variants of Elizabeth, so there's another cast member...

It's cool to look at a bunch of variants and nicknames and see what elements of the name remain the same across the options.

I find naming characters rather difficult, though I do find quite a few names I like from time to time. In fact, I keep a list of names I like, ones that are waiting for someone to adopt them. (Lemme know if you'd like me to email you that list.) For finding new ones, I like browsing Behind the Name. My dad's genealogy studies led him to tell me about Baby Name Wizard, which lets you browse around by popularity via time period and/or regions. Andrea told me about the Dada Name Generator, which can be good for inspiring desired syllables but not always for a whole name (at least in my case).

I looked up Melichor the other day and saw that it was the name of one of the Magi (three kings, baby Jesus, etc). In case you're interested, the names of the other two Magi were Jasper and Balthazar.
