Involving Mark Twain, Satan, mini version of creation and the Angel of Death. Endearing models of characters, very creepy storyline.

That was most emphatically not banned from TV. It was part of some Claymation (with a capital C, it was directed by Will Vinton, the guy who gave us the California Raisins) special that was altogether awesome.

A-ha! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088678/)

I remember watching that on TV as a kid, I think my parents even have a VHS of it lying around somewhere.

I didn't think it had been banned... Youtube is not the greatest source of information...unless you want to learn what the mouth-breathers on the street are thinking this particular second.

I really want to read the story it was based on.

it's based on the short story The Mysterious Stranger. Mark Twain wrote it in his later years after he lost his family and most of his business ventures went pear-shaped. A lot of the stories from this period are dark and filled with a sense of hopelessness.
