Date: Sep. 19th, 2013 12:15 am (UTC)The Disney take on the tale removes a lot of Beauty's heroism. In the story I used to read, Beauty's father is not at all a weak or sickly man, but a powerful merchant. He is ready to accept his punishment for stealing a flower from the Beast's garden but Beauty insists on taking his place because it was she who asked for the flower. Once ensconced in the enchanted castle, her every desire is catered to and in the evenings, she has long conversations with the Beast, who is always very respectful and courteous to her. He asks her at the end of each night if she will marry him (bit pushy but, curse and all that) and when she refuses, he accepts it immediately and departs.
When finally she agrees to wed him, it is because she realizes that he is her dearest friend and the thought that she might have lost him devastates her. It was very much a story about Beauty learning about herself, and who her friends are and where her loyalties lie, and saving the day with her pluck and her patience and her great heart.
That said, I still totally love Mackenzie's thesis (and I would bet it covers a few versions of the story anyway) and that would be a thing I'd be excited about too! Also I love these two together. This should be fun, can't wait to see what happens next.
